Sea buries a Ghanan village, and more may follow
The old shore road to Totope is now under the sea, and when developers began carving out another one, it was washed away so often they abandoned it. Now the road to this village is just a track across the sand.
On this southern coast of Ghana, the Atlantic Ocean is rising. Every few years, residents of a string of villages leave their homes and build new ones farther back, abandoning them to the encroaching sand and water.
'When I was young, you had to climb a coconut tree to see the sea,' said Alex Horgah, a 57-year-old fisherman, sitting under a thatch shelter. The old men of the village say every year the shore advances a few yards.

Deforestation a key part of UN global treaty talks
Years ago, no one thought twice about felling the rainforest around this village in West Africa.
Land was cleared, cocoa and palm oil were planted, and the hamlet survived. But the wind blows stronger across the fields and scrub these days, and the rainfall is heavier than the elders remember.
'Before, the weather wasn't so hot,' says the village chief, Nana Opare Ababio.
Afiaso, with 620 people, is on the border of Ghana's Kakum National Park, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Accra, where a 160-nation U.N. conference is discussing how the issues of deforestation and conservation fit into a new global treaty on climate change.

In Kenya slum, sun and sewage equals progress
The stench rising from a fly infested sewage ditch is worsened by the scorching sun. But for some enterprising residents, it's the smell of progress.
People in Nairobi's Kibera slum are surviving soaring food and fuel prices and poor sanitation by harnessing the power of two things they have in plenty: sewage and sunshine.
Some have helped construct a network of public latrines that recycle human waste into gas for cooking and light. Others, assisted by a Swiss aid organization, use sunlight to purify drinking water, dramatically slashing cases of waterborne disease.
