Long Island boy critical after struck by SUV
Police in Suffolk County say a five-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by an SUV in Bay Shore.
Police say the boy, Anthony Carrasco of Brentwood, apparently ran into the street and was struck by an SUV yesterday afternoon.
Carrasco was taken to Schneider Children's Hospital where he is being treated for severe head trauma and a fractured leg.
Police have made no arrests. The investigation is continuing.

2 charged in death of LI man found in car trunk
A mechanic and another man were charged Sunday in the shooting death of a towing company owner whose body was found on Christmas Eve in a car trunk, police said.
James Caldwell, 49, of Mastic Beach, pleaded not guilty Sunday to second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Kevin Koch, the owner of KC Towing.
'They beat a confession out of me, 14 hours,' Caldwell told Newsday as he was led from a police precinct Sunday.
Steven Browne, 29, of Mastic Beach, pleaded not guilty to hindering prosecution.

LI men arrested in connection to body in car trunk
Suffolk County authorities have arrested two men in connection to a body police found in the trunk of a car.
Authorities were conducting an investigation at a towing company in Middle Island last month when the unidentified man's body was discovered at the scene.
A Mastic Beach man has been arrested on a murder charge in connection to the death, and another has been arrested on hindering prosecution charges. The men are scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday.

2 accused of giving vodka to NY teen found dead
Two men have been accused of giving vodka to a teenager found dead in the early morning hours of New Year's Day after a party with friends.
The body of 14-year-old Garrett Quedens was found by a newspaper deliveryman on a roadside just before 4 a.m. Thursday. An autopsy showed a significant amount of alcohol in his system, police said, but further tests were being done. There were no signs of foul play.
Garrett had been hanging out in a wooded area with a friend during the evening Wednesday despite frigid temperatures, said Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commander of the Suffolk County homicide squad.

Man stranded on NY island after boat drifts away
A man who was stranded on an island in a Long Island lagoon after his boat drifted away has been rescued.
Suffolk County police say Charlie Sirico went to Fishers Island on Wednesday to work on a house. They say he was about to leave when he saw his boat floating away with his two dogs and cell phone aboard.
Sirico tried swimming to the boat but couldn't make it and had to turn back.
The Bay Shore resident radioed the Coast Guard and gave a vague description of his location in Great South Bay, a lagoon on the southern side of Long Island.

Suffolk Executive Steven Levy Monday announced plans to construct a back up emergency communications response station for the county at the former Sixth Precinct building in Coram.

LI officials investigate illness at senior homes
Long Island health officials are investigating a gastrointestinal illness that has swept through at least four elder care institutions and sent dozens to local hospital emergency rooms this month.
Suffolk County health officials say they are trying to determine whether the illness is caused by the norovirus, a common ailment in the winter months at nursing homes, schools and cruise ships. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.
Health officials warn that the danger for the elderly is that they can dehydrate quickly. Rehydration and rest are necessary for recovery.

Car slams into Long Island home
Police say a driver who fell asleep at the wheel slammed his car through the wall of a Long Island home, coming within feet of the bedroom doors. No one was hurt.
The accident occurred at 6:30 a.m. Monday in Miller Place. The car demolished the front wall of the house and left the roof sagging.
Suffolk County police say the driver of the Ford Mustang has not been charged.
The occupants of the house had to climb through the bedroom windows to get outside. The family's two Labrador retrievers also were not hurt, but their two cats are missing.

NY man, 39, dies after Christmas hit-and-run crash
A 39-year-old bicyclist has died of the injuries he suffered in a Christmas hit-and-run crash on Long Island.
Suffolk County police said Sunday that Hector Rapalo died over the weekend after being hit at around 10:45 p.m. Christmas night in Central Islip.
Authorities are seeking the driver. They say Rapalo was struck by a small black car that probably suffered front-end damage.

NY teenager accused of driving with car door open
A Long Island teenager has been accused of driving with one car door open and a passenger vomiting out a window.
Suffolk County highway patrol officers say the 17-year-old Nesconset (nes-KON'-set) resident was high on drugs when he was arrested Saturday morning. They say his 15-year-old passenger was leaning out the window of the open door while throwing up.
An officer stopped the car in Farmingville around 3 a.m.
The driver has been charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, driving while impaired by drugs and endangering the welfare of a child.

Stained glass window smashed in NY church break-in
Police say a burglar took a hammer to a stained-glass window to try to steal money from a Long Island church.
The Rev. Marvin Hooks says it's unclear whether anything is missing after the break-in early Saturday at St. Mary A.M.E. Zion Church in Medford. He says several sacred objects used in services were knocked over.
Suffolk County police say officers responding to a burglar alarm at the church soon found suspect Richard Sager. The 42-year-old was arrested on burglary and criminal mischief charges.
Isaac R. Toussie left the federal courthouse in Central Islip, N.Y., on Dec. 10, 2002, after pleading guilty to defrauding Suffolk County.
