A man who was stranded on an island in a Long Island lagoon after his boat drifted away has been rescued.

Sirico tried swimming to the boat but couldn't make it and had to turn back.

The Bay Shore resident radioed the Coast Guard and gave a vague description of his location in Great South Bay, a lagoon on the southern side of Long Island.

Long Island health officials are investigating a gastrointestinal illness that has swept through at least four elder care institutions and sent dozens to local hospital emergency rooms this month.

Suffolk County health officials say they are trying to determine whether the illness is caused by the norovirus, a common ailment in the winter months at nursing homes, schools and cruise ships. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.

Health officials warn that the danger for the elderly is that they can dehydrate quickly. Rehydration and rest are necessary for recovery.
