Police: School in NY suburbs went into lockdown
Police say a school in the New York suburbs went into a lockdown when a man who lives nearby fired a rifle from his back porch.
The 31-year-old male resident of Christian Herald Road in the hamlet of Valley Cottage was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence. No injuries were reported.
Police say seven officers were sent to the man's neighborhood after reports of gunshots about 9 a.m. Wednesday.
A Nyack schools spokeswoman says that officials at nearby Liberty Elementary School also called police after gunshots were heard. She says the school was locked down about 15 minutes later, then reopened around 9:35 a.m.
